Education

I have an English BA Hons degree from Leeds University and the Private and Executive Secretarial Diploma awarded by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Publishing Career

• 1990-1993 Longman UK, Harlow, Editor promoted to Senior Editor within the UK schools division (primary)

Responsibilities: proofreading, copy-editing, commissioning of artwork, photographs and covers, liaison with production, design, marketing and freelancers, control of budgets and schedules. I worked on a number of 4-colour National Curriculum texts for primary geography, English and mathematics.

• 1993-1996 Framework Press Educational Publishers, Lancaster, Commissioning Editor

Responsibilities: commissioning new titles for the Framework Press secondary professional development list. Particular areas of responsibility included publishing for GNVQs, personal professional development and resources for English teachers (photocopiable packs that included both pupil materials and INSET for teachers). I was also given responsibility for contracts, copyright issues, budgets and schedules. As Framework Press was a small company, I was involved in all aspects of the day-to-day business and worked closely with the marketing department. I was also directly involved in the design and copy writing of all promotional material including catalogues and leaflets. In 1996, Framework Press sold their list to Folens Publishers based in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. I was asked by Folens to stay in post and to work from home.

• 1996-1999 Folens Publishers Limited, Dunstable, Commissioning Editor

Responsibilities: commissioning new titles for the Framework Press secondary professional development and secondary English and PSHE lists and maintaining the backlist.

In 1999, Folens Publishers sold the Framework Press list of titles to Ginn Heinemann Professional Development, Oxford . Again, I was given the opportunity to stay in post and continue working from home.

• 2000-2001 Ginn Heinemann Professional Development, Oxford , Commissioning Editor

Responsibilities: my first task was to conduct a thorough overhaul of the Framework Press and Daniels lists that were acquired from Folens in January 2000. This included deciding which titles, out of around 250, should be put out of print, revised as 2 nd editions or actively promoted. I was also involved in the strategic development of the division and was given responsibility for developing new publishing for the Framework secondary list whilst working to grow a new list of primary titles. I carried joint responsibility for the research and development of two new major publishing projects that were to be launched in September 2001. This involved drawing on a wide network of experienced authors and consultants and also included negotiations with HE institutions with a view to gaining accreditation and endorsement. With the departure of the senior publisher, much of this work was initiated by myself and a fellow commissioning editor.

• 2001-present Freelance editorial including development work, proof-reading, copy editing and permissions clearance for publishing houses such as Harcourt Education (formerly Heinemann), Macmillan, Hodder and Studia. Subject areas I have worked on for both primary and secondary textbooks include English, PSHE, RE, PE, geography, history and also English schemes for the international market. I work on multi-component projects which require detailed cross-referencing and thorough checking of text, artwork and photos. I am happy to work on screen using Windows XP and Word.
